Internationally, Heyns was a three-time Olympian. Mere months after her decorated Husker career ended, Heyns won a pair of Gold Medals in unprecedented fashion at the Atlanta Olympics. She became the first woman in Olympic history to win both the and meter breaststroke events at the same games and is the only female Nebraska student-athlete to win an Olympic Gold Medal. She held a total of 14 individual world records during her career; and more breaststroke world records than any other swimmer in history, male or female.

In her final Olympic appearance in , Heyns took home the Bronze Medal in the meter breaststroke. She won the award again in , after setting 11 world records in a span of three months. On the conference level, Kirby finished second at the Big Eight Championship and was fourth in en route to becoming one of only two three-time all-conference performers in program history.
